If you’re evaluating a delivery platform vs a routing-only tool, here’s the honest answer: they’re not the same product, they don’t solve the same problem, and the decision usually has more to do with where your operation is in its lifecycle than with which vendor has the best demo.
Routing-only SaaS is excellent at one thing: turning a list of stops and a fleet of vehicles into an optimized route. Delivery platforms wrap routing inside a wider operational system — dispatcher workspace, driver app, POD capture, customer tracking, compliance, billing. One isn’t strictly better than the other. They serve different operations.
We build Zoopit, so we have a side. But routing-only SaaS has been in the market longer than we have, has a bigger content footprint, and is the right answer for plenty of operations. We’ll be direct about which ones.
What routing-only SaaS does best
Best-in-class route optimization algorithm. Routing-only vendors have spent more than a decade tuning their solvers. For pure single-depot, multi-stop optimization, the results are excellent — often within 1–3% of the theoretical optimum. If routing math is the only thing you need, this category is hard to beat.
A simple, focused UI. Because routing-only SaaS does one thing, the interface stays clean. A planner can upload a stop list, hit optimize, and have routes within a minute. There’s no learning curve around dispatch workflows, driver hour rules, or POD configuration — because those things aren’t in the product.
Strong content libraries and brand recognition. The established routing-only vendors have built some of the most-cited content libraries in the space. Their blogs rank for hundreds of “route optimization” queries, their case studies are polished, and their domain authority is well above any newer platform’s.
Mature integrations with common SMB tools. Shopify, WooCommerce, Zapier, and most of the common SMB ecommerce stack work out of the box. For a small ecommerce delivery operation, routing-only SaaS drops in quickly.
Lower price point. Routing-only SaaS typically lists at 70–150 NOK per vehicle per month, lower than platforms that include POD, customer tracking, and driver hours. The trade-off is real.
What routing-only SaaS doesn’t do
- No driver hours / compliance tracking. Routing-only SaaS does not handle EU 561/2006 driving-time rules, Nordic AML / arbetstidslag, or rest-period documentation. If you’re audited on driver hours, this category isn’t where that audit gets answered.
- No native proof of delivery. Photo POD, signature capture, exception logging — these are not core features. You’ll integrate a separate POD tool.
- No real dispatcher workspace. Routing-only SaaS optimizes routes; it doesn’t help a dispatcher manage exceptions, reassign stops mid-day, or coordinate across multiple depots in real time.
- No Nordic compliance natively. US and UK regulations get more attention. Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish working-time rules require explicit handling that routing-only SaaS doesn’t ship.
- No time tracking for payroll. Driver hours don’t flow to payroll. You’ll reconcile that separately.
- No multi-leg / terminal handoff support. Hub-and-spoke distribution, meeting points, train+truck combinations — outside the model.
If you need any of the above, you’ll glue routing-only SaaS to two or three other tools. That can work — and for many SMB operators, it does work — but it’s a stack, not a platform.
What a delivery platform does best
A delivery platform is built for operations that have outgrown the single-tool model. Where this category wins:
Unified operational system, not a routing tool. Route planning, dispatcher workspace, driver app, POD capture, customer tracking, and driver time tracking are one product with one data model. The dispatcher, driver, and finance team all see the same source of truth.
Native EU 561/2006 and (in some cases) Nordic working-time compliance. Driver hours, rest periods, and overtime documentation come out of the platform as audit-ready exports.
Built for multi-leg operations. Terminal handoffs, meeting-point splits, train + last-mile combinations — these are first-class concepts in well-designed delivery platforms.
Driver time tracking included. A separate driver mobile app with break reminders, geofencing, and payroll export is part of the platform — not a 50 NOK/driver add-on from a different vendor.
Customer-facing tracking. Live ETA, branded tracking page, automatic SMS/email at key moments. Routing-only SaaS often supports basic customer tracking as an add-on, but delivery platforms make it first-class.
Side-by-side comparison
| Capability | Routing-only SaaS | Delivery platform (Zoopit category) |
|---|---|---|
| Route optimization | Best-in-class, mature solver | Strong, within a few % on benchmarks |
| Dispatcher workspace | Minimal — optimize-and-go | Full live map, drag-to-reassign, exception filters |
| Driver mobile app | Basic, focused on stop list | Offline-first, POD, signature, time tracking |
| Proof of delivery | Limited, often integrated externally | Photo, signature, barcode, reason codes — native |
| Driver hours / compliance | Not in scope | Native EU 561/2006 + NO/SE/DK working-time rules |
| Customer tracking | Basic, add-on | Branded tracking, SMS, real ETA, photo on delivery |
| Multi-leg / terminal handoffs | No | First-class concept |
| Integrations | Strong SMB ecommerce (Shopify, etc.) | Strong TMS, ERP (Visma, PowerOffice, Tripletex, Fortnox) |
| Languages | English-first, some localization | Native Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, English |
| Pricing (NOK / vehicle / mo) | ~70–150 | ~80–180 |
| Implementation | 1 week self-serve | 2–8 weeks with sales-assist |
Five questions to decide
1. Do you need routing only, or routing plus dispatch, POD, and driver hours? Routing only → a routing-only SaaS is probably enough. Routing plus the rest → you’re in delivery platform territory.
2. Where are your drivers based? North America / UK / mixed → routing-only SaaS has more local familiarity. Norway, Sweden, Denmark / cross-border EU → delivery platforms with native EU 561/2006 and Nordic compliance.
3. How many drivers, and what does the dispatcher do all day? 1–10 drivers, dispatcher plans and goes home → routing-only SaaS. 10+ drivers, dispatcher manages exceptions live → delivery platform’s dispatcher workspace is the difference.
4. Do you need to document driver hours for audit or payroll? Yes → delivery platform (routing-only SaaS doesn’t do this). No → routing-only SaaS is fine.
5. How important is brand familiarity vs Nordic / multi-leg fit? Brand familiarity → established routing-only vendors win. Built around how Nordic transport actually works → delivery platform.
When Zoopit is right for you
Zoopit is a delivery platform built specifically for Nordic operations. The signals that point to us:
- You’re in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, or operate cross-border in the Nordics.
- You need EU 561/2006 driver hours, rest periods, and overtime documented automatically.
- Your operation includes terminal handoffs, multi-leg routes, or train + last-mile combinations.
- You want one platform instead of three vendors (routing + POD + time tracking).
- Your dispatchers manage exceptions live and need a real workspace, not just an optimizer.
- Native Norwegian, Swedish, Danish UI is non-negotiable for dispatcher and customer-facing tracking.
When Zoopit might NOT be the right fit
- You only need pure route optimization, with no compliance or POD requirements. A routing-only SaaS is leaner and cheaper.
- You’re a 1–5 driver gig courier. A small-courier app is a better fit and significantly cheaper.
- You operate primarily in English-speaking markets outside the Nordics. Routing-only SaaS has more content authority and brand recognition there.
- You’re a global retailer orchestrating 3PL carriers at scale. Enterprise multi-carrier orchestration platforms are built for that.
- You’re asset-heavy long-haul where tamper-resistant telematics hardware is central. Enterprise telematics platforms are built for that lane.
Real-world fit
Choose a routing-only SaaS when: single-depot last-mile with 1–15 vehicles, dispatchers plan in the morning and the day runs itself, no driver-hours audit pressure, North America/UK with brand familiarity preference, Shopify-centric stack you’re fine keeping.
Choose a delivery platform like Zoopit when: NO/SE/DK or Nordic cross-border, need AML / arbetstidslag / arbejdsmiljølov documentation, operation includes terminal handoffs / multi-leg / train + last-mile, want one platform instead of three vendors, dispatchers manage exceptions live.
Honest gray zone: an 8-vehicle Nordic SMB doing simple last-mile from a single depot, with no compliance audit pressure, could go either way. Try both for two weeks; decide on what the dispatcher reaches for first.
Frequently asked questions
Can I migrate from a routing-only tool I’m already using?
Yes. We import stop lists, customer addresses, vehicle fleets, and historical routes from CSV/JSON exports. Most migrations take 1–2 weeks.
Does a delivery platform optimize routes as well as a dedicated routing-only SaaS?
The honest answer is that the dedicated solvers have a few percent edge on pure-optimization benchmarks because they’ve been tuned for a decade. For most real-world operations, the difference is invisible — the gain from POD + dispatcher workspace + compliance integration outweighs the routing delta.
Is a delivery platform more expensive than a routing-only SaaS?
Per-vehicle, slightly. Routing-only SaaS lists at 70–150 NOK / vehicle / month vs delivery platforms at 80–180. On a total-stack basis (routing + POD + time tracking + customer tracking), delivery platforms are typically cheaper.
Does a routing-only SaaS work for Nordic operations?
It works as a routing tool. It does not handle Nordic working-time rules, native Nordic languages across the full product, or multi-leg distribution patterns common in Norwegian and Swedish transport.
Can I use a routing-only SaaS and a delivery platform together?
Technically yes — but two systems means two sources of truth, and that defeats the unified-platform point. Pick one.
Which is better for ecommerce last-mile?
Small ecommerce shops with Shopify or WooCommerce → routing-only SaaS drops in faster. Mid-sized Nordic ecommerce with multiple depots and SMS notifications → delivery platform.
What to do next
- Answer the five questions above. The right category is usually obvious within ten minutes.
- If you’re still on the fence, run a 1-vehicle pilot with each. Two weeks each, same routes, same drivers.
- Test the driver hours export and POD flow on the delivery platform specifically. Those are the capabilities routing-only SaaS doesn’t ship.
